"I didn't know I was going to run so fast. But I came out to be a
champion, and I was. I just tried to stay relaxed. I'm always
relaxing. That's the way to go so fast: relax and just focus."
Usain Bolt, after setting the new world record of running 100 meters,
at 9.69 seconds, Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008.

I happened to see him run this race in person while we were there for the Olympics. The amazing thing was that he started relaxing even before he even finished running. He knew he had already won. One night I was walking on the Olympic Green with my Chinese friend Shen Pei and a man asked us for directions to the Olympic Village. This man happened to be a track coach from Angola and he was on his way to Usain Bolt's birthday party at the village. This coach said he had trained and worked with Usain in the past and he told us a story of how Usain can sometimes be when he's among other runners in the mornings when everyone is just beginning to wake up before a long day of training. He said Usain is known to wake up first and blast the stereo loudly and dance around the room to pump up his fellow runners (and probably annoy them) as they begin to wake up. I thought this said a lot about who Usain is and how maybe no matter what we're doing whether it be training for the Olympics or becoming writers, I think his mentality of "relaxed but focused" is fitting. We shouldn't take ourselves too seriously but we should just have fun with it - whatever we do.
